The 400 Blows – One of the best early French New Wave films and a great look at troubled youths. Truffaut uses careful and thoughtful direction to show minor events and how they can shape Antoine’s life.

Seven Samurai – My pick for the greatest film ever made by the greatest film director who ever lived. Everything about this epic film is masterful from the nuanced and well developed characters to the superbly acted performances of the cast. The ingenuity of the action scenes and frantic pace hold up even by today’s standards.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg – A beautiful French musical where every line of the movie is sung. Demy’s movies are wonderfully saturated in color and Deneuve is so beautiful in this movie that your heart will break right along with Guy’s.
