Indoor Play Areas

Science Wall at Rice Library

Play is vital for a child’s development and one of the components of early literacy skill building. It gets their brains moving, which makes them smarter and ultimately makes learning to read easier!

According to the Encyclopedia of Early Childhood Development, “Play and literacy share higher-order cognitive processes such as symbolic thinking, imaging, and problem-solving.” That’s why we love seeing kids playing at the library (especially with their parents) and why we have multiple areas designed for that exact purpose!

Lisa Rice Library features:

  • Science wall
  • Giant blue blocks in the children’s program room

Bob Kirby Branch features:

  • Activity tree
  • Lego table
  • Little blue blocks in the children’s program room

Smiths Grove Branch features:

  • Indoor treehouse
  • Beam projection games

Buchanon Park Branch features:

  • Puppet theater in the branch
  • Indoor play area just outside in the Tennis/Multipurpose Facility

Library programs make you SMART!

Did you know that you can get your child ready to read just by reading aloud to them on a regular basis? Pre-literacy skills are developed from birth on, and the library is the best place to engage them in learning and fun in a positive group setting.

The library hosts weekly programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers focused on reading, playing, and singing. Special events for school age children are held every month, with a variety of creative themes chosen to engage their imaginations and minds!

Some activities require registration. Check the calendar for details.
